On the days I’m home with my son, I wait for naptime.

On this particular day, I’m getting some work done when I see him moving on the monitor.

“Wait!”, I think, “Not yet!”

I want him to stay sleeping so I can get some more work done. He doesn’t oblige. Stirring turns to sounds. Back to dayshift with baby.

At first I’m upset. I wanted to get more done. Then I guess some of the advice I’ve read and heard over the years about presence and enjoying the moment sinks in, and I think “Kwesi, enjoy now. Your work can wait.”

And then I feel it. Calm…peace…and the caffeine from the energy drink I finished 20 minutes ago.

And somewhere from the depths of wisdom that likely came from someone other than me it hit me that this is what purpose is all about:

It’s not as important to know your purpose in life, as it is to know your purpose right now.

Right now, it’s about taking care of my son.

Right now, it’s about enjoying the last time he’ll ever be 18 months old.

Right now, my purpose is to be with him.

How happy would you and I be if we only ever simply focused on our purpose RIGHT NOW?
