CARING FOR THE CAREGIVERS
THE BACKGROUND
On October 14, 2007, Constable Kwesi Millington walked into Vancouver International Airport with three fellow officers, responding to a call about a man who had violently destroyed airport property.
The interaction between Kwesi, his fellow officers and the man started with conversation, progressed to struggle and arrest, and ended when the man died of heart failure.
That night was only the beginning. Over the next decade, Kwesi faced speculation, wrongful accusation, and unjustified incarceration. Through battling many issues, he has learned significant lessons about mental health and resilience.
There are those who instruct on resilience based on schooling and degrees. While I agree that those are important and am endlessly studying resilience and mental health, a program for first responders to help them deal with stress, burnout, anxiety, depression and possibly PTSD, should be presented by a fellow first responder who has ALSO dealt with and overcome the SAME issues.
